Chapter 12 - Can you sleep with me for a while? (2)

Bo Li didn't know how much time had passed when a rustling sound woke her up.

She heard someone dragging something heavy into her tent.

That person seemed to have a limp. She could hear that person dragging one of their feet. Their footsteps alternated between light and heavy, and the thing they were dragging was struggling and whimpering.

Erik?

Bo Li was fully awake by now. She didn't dare to get up. She was worried that her guess was wrong. She opened her eyes halfway and looked out through the gap between her eyelashes.

Sure enough, it was Erik, and the heavy object he was dragging was the trainer.

The trainer was gagged by a rag, and her hands were tied behind her back. She wasn't a slender woman. She was a sturdy and strong middle-aged woman. She wouldn't be able to control so many older children in the circus otherwise.

And yet, Erik was able to easily drag her by the collar into the tent. Not only did he recover at an inhuman speed, he also possessed astonishing strength.

The scene was straight out of a horror movie. Well, he was the protagonist of a horror movie.

The air was filled with the smell of sweat and urine. The trainer was sweating heavily in fright and had peed in her dress.

And yet, Erik seemed to have no sense of smell or hearing. He ignored the trainer's odor and muffled pleas for mercy. He tossed her onto a chair and tied her up.

From Bo Li's perspective, she could only see his rough movements and hear the creaking of the shaking chair.

After doing that, he turned around and walked towards her.

Bo Li was a bit frazzled. What was he doing? Was he getting revenge for her? Or, was he taking this opportunity to vent his pent-up desire to kill?

The footsteps stopped.

Erik stood in front of her and seemed to be looking at her swollen, purple palm.

He was clearly young and thin to an unhealthy extreme, but his skeletal structure was tall and wide enough to block the outside light.

She could hear him breathing above her. That heavy, muffled breathing echoed behind the white mask.

This type of gradually approaching breathing was a staple in horror movies. The slow and powerful breathing symbolized the beast within the murderer, and the death knell of the victim.

However, he wasn't planning on killing her. He was even protecting her.

Why?

As Bo Li listened to his breathing, she didn't dare to move. She was as stiff as a stone sculpture from head to toe.

His gaze had more of a presence than the sound of his breathing. She could sense it slowly moving across her palm like an accurate ruler that was measuring the lengths of her wounds and assessing their depths.

Time slowly passed.

Bo Li's heart was thumping so loudly. Her body felt numb from his stare.

After several seconds passed, he seemed to complete his assessment. He turned around, walked over, and grabbed the trainer by the collar. He dragged the trainer along with the chair to her bedside.

Bo Li couldn't see what was happening. She could only imagine it based on sound and smell. The sound of breathing, of footsteps, the rubbing of clothing, muffled pleaing, as well as the increasingly strong smell of sweat and urine.

There was a loud thud, and the strong smell of blood filled the air.

Startled, Bo Li couldn't pretend to sleep anymore. She opened her eyes and sat up.

Reality was more terrifying than her imagination.

Erik was standing in front of her with his back facing her. With one hand, he held the trainer down like she was an animal in a slaughterhouse. With his other hand, he was mercilessly stabbing the dagger into her palm.

Hearing her getting up, he turned around to look at her. Behind his white mask, his eyes still had residual coldness and viciousness.

The trainer acted as if she had seen a savior. She desperately shook the chair.

For a moment, there was only the creaking from the joints of the chair legs.

At the same time, Erik pulled out his dagger, indifferently shook off the blood, and seemed like he was going to leave.

He seemed sure that she would want to save the trainer instead of being grateful for his tit-for-tat retaliation on her behalf.

It was true that Bo Li didn't want to thank him. This wasn't a justifiable act of revenge. It felt satisfying at the moment, but what about the future? Who would take care of the aftermath?

He had made such a big hole in the trainer's hand. She would have to tell a hundred lies tomorrow to make up for it.

And yet, she had to admit that his actions gave her a strange, ardent sense of security. She hadn't felt so safe since she transmigrated.

After coming to this world, she was constantly panicked and uneasy. She had to force herself to calm down and abandon emotions that she couldn't afford to have: fear, anxiety, and anger.

Even when she was beaten with a rattan stick, her first reaction was to stay calm and not fight back. No one would help her. She was alone in this world and couldn't be blinded by anger. She had to remain clear-headed at all times.

She felt angry, but couldn't retaliate. It was true that Erik's revenge was extremely inappropriate and would cause her a lot of trouble.

But, she had suppressed so many emotions today. There was no need to keep suppressing them.

She would worry about tomorrow's problems tomorrow.

Thinking up to this point, Bo Li ignored the trainer's pleading expression, lifted up her blanket, looked up at Erik, and sincerely said, "I'm sleepy. Can you sleep with me for a while?"
