Title: A Fake Holy Mother in the Zombie Apocalypse

Chapter 264 - Even in her dreams, she couldn't run away from Lu Xingchi (3)
The skinny man flaunted, "My family used to raise snakes. I know how to extract venom. There's a venomous snake species in this area. They hide themselves under the rocks by undisturbed water sources. Captain Zheng wants the venom. It took me a long time to save this amount."
It was pretty miraculous that the skinny man, who was so afraid of zombies, wasn't afraid of snakes.
Bei Nuan suddenly remembered that he had called out Great Immortal Liu when he was terrified yesterday. She realized just then Great Immortal Liu was referring to a snake deity.
The skinny man shook the small bottle. "Don't underestimate this. It's more valuable than gold. In the past, I could have sold this for a lot of money."
Bei Nuan immediately asked, "Can you sell me a drop?"
Lu Xingchi turned his head to look at her.
Bei Nuan ignored his disapproving expression and continued insisting, "A drop, one drop is enough."
The skinny man generously said, "A drop? You don't have to buy it. You can have it for free. But what do you want venom for? To poison someone? You won't even be able to pour it back out no matter what kind of container you use to store it."
Bei Nuan took out the small towel. "No. I've just never seen snake venom before. I want to see what it looks like."
The skinny man pulled out the stopper and carefully poured out a drop onto her towel.
While doing this, he warned, "Snake venom is very poisonous. Don't use this towel if you have a cut. If the venom gets into your body, it'll be enough to poison you. Even if there isn't a cut on your hand, you still have to be careful and quickly wash it off. Use soap."
The drop of liquid had fallen on the towel. It was slightly yellow and viscous like the sap from a tree.
Lu Xingchi's gaze fell on the familiar small, white towel. He looked at Bei Nuan.
"What kind of witchcraft are you up to again?" he asked.
Bei Nuan's heart skipped a beat. He said "again".
When she was doing the previous task, she had been covert about collecting Dansui's tears. He shouldn't have noticed, right?
Or could it be the task before that one? Had he become suspicious ever since she collected his nail clippings, hair, and eyelash?
"How could I? You're overthinking. How could I be doing witchcraft?" Bei Nuan pretended that she wasn't concerned and put the small, white towel into her pocket space.
Then, she took out a box of antibiotics from her backpack and offered it to the skinny man. "I can't just take your stuff for free."
There was a risk of being bitten when extracting snake venom. It wasn't an easy process, so she couldn't take that for free.
Although the skinny man initially politely declined, he still couldn't resist accepting the box.
Antibiotics were extremely valuable in the apocalypse. Having a small box like this one could be the difference between life and death.
There were still plenty of antibiotics in Bei Nuan's pocket space, so she didn't particularly value them. She found a small mirror from the lower layer of her pocket space and wiped a circle on the mirror with the towel stained with sweat and snake venom.
Absolute Obedience was immediately marked complete. A description popped up: look into the target's eyes and think "well-behaved baby, be obedient". Your words will leave a mark in the target's heart.
The countdown started counting down, starting at 48 hours.
The description was vague. Bei Nuan pondered. So she had to look the target in the eyes and recite that incantation?
They soon arrived at the main gate.
Sure enough, Captain Zheng was waiting in the spot where the search team had gathered yesterday. He was leaning on a jeep and wiping a small dagger that looked like it was used for throwing. He wasn't too surprised to see that Lu Xingchi and Bei Nuan had come together.
"I have a private job and want to ask if you're willing to accept it."
Ah, so it wasn't a job for the search team.
Captain Zheng said there was someone in town recruiting people to retrieve items from his previous home. Since there were many zombies in that area, the reward for the job was very generous.
"The reward is a month's worth of meal tickets or a night at Taipingmen."
"A month's worth of meal tickets!" The skinny man sounded extremely envious.
A month's worth of meal tickets was equivalent to going out to search for supplies ten times.
"What's Taipingmen?" Bei Nuan's point of interest was different from the skinny man's.
Bei Nuan thought she saw a gloomy look flash through Captain Zheng's eyes.
"It's a place where the rich and powerful go to eat and play," he calmly said without any emotion.
Even in the apocalypse, people were divided into classes.
It had been mentioned in the novel that the base was controlled by several forces from different countries. There were people with unknown origins and complicated backgrounds in those forces.
Once the world fell into chaos, shady people would come forward. Although these people also lived in the base, they lived in a place that she couldn't see. These people didn't have to worry about getting meal tickets.
Bei Nuan knew that Lu Xingchi wouldn't care at all about a month's meal tickets or a night at Taipingmen.
A thought popped up in Bei Nuan's head.
"Lu Xingchi," Bei Nuan raised her head, silently chanted "well-behaved baby, be obedient", and seriously stared into Lu Xingchi's eyes, "Let's go take a trip?"
Lu Xingchi lowered his head to look at her. His gaze seemed locked for a moment. He suddenly nodded. "Okay, we'll go if you want."
Bei Nuan pondered; did this count as succeeding? She couldn't tell.
Bei Nuan knew very well that he would probably go along with any request she made no matter how unreasonable it was.
Bei Nuan silently sighed. She had to use other people as guinea pigs to see the real effect.
T/N: I'll be dropping A Fake Holy Mother in the Zombie Apocalypse ("FHM") after chapter part 287 (the beginning of raw ch 78). I feel the quality of the story has gone downhill for a while ever since Little, Delightful Tasks was introduced. And while I can sort of see the author building up for jokes each chapter, the punchline never comes or falls flat.
I'm replacing FHM with The OOC Villainess and the White Moonlight Heroine are BFFs ("OOCV"), a novel jampack with a variety of comedy in every chapter. Advance chapters on Patreon will be fully replaced with OOCV before the end of March, and I’ll post OOCV 5x/week on or before Monday, April 1st.
