Chapter 40 - Happy Bystander (2)

Surrounded by all the neighbors outside, Big Aunty plopped down on the ground and started wailing, “My life is so awful! Perhaps Ye Qing’s parents left her this house, but the land belonged to my father- and mother-n-laws! We are the oldest children and had our youngest brother’s best interest in mind and gave this best piece of land to our little brother. When our little brother built this house, my husband helped build over half of it! And now this? It wasn’t like we tried to take the house from Ye Qing! But why let the house go empty if she wasn’t staying here? Why couldn’t we stay here while she was gone?  How are young people nowadays so unconscientious?”

A few of those standing outside had chatted with Ye Qing during the stray cat incident and was quite fond of her. In addition, they had a little bit of idea what had been going on, so they stood up for her and said, “Old Ye’s, didn’t you say previously that it was you who had your son and daughter-in-law move out for your niece to rest up while she is sick?”

Hearing that, Big Aunty was even angrier, “You didn’t know. My niece LIED about her terminal illness! It was all fabricated!”

At the front door, the butcher, with her cellphone in hand, looked around, and found the location that Ye Qing described to her over the phone. Her eyes lit up and she pointed at a spot next to the lounger and said in a fearful tone, “Hey, look! What is that? Is that blood?”

As soon as she had said that, everybody was shocked and they all turned and looked in the direction that she had indicated.

Big Aunt, who was lying, also looked over there subconsciously.

There was what looked like blood on the ground that had been there for a few days and its color had darkened. The area wasn’t very widespread either, as though someone had spit out just a little. One could only see it when one was looking at it carefully.

The butcher said again, “I ran into the Ye’s girl the day she took off. She had on a mask and she looked pale. She said her illness was getting worse and she had spit out some blood and wanted to go back to the hospital to have it checked out. She also said….”

When she stopped, the crowd couldn’t help but ask her, “What else did she say?”

The butcher said, “She said she was going to bid farewell to her Big and Second Aunties and leave her keys with you and have one of you move in if she can’t make it back. But she also said that it’s probably best that you don’t live here. She said it was her fault, that she had contaminated this house that was left to her by her parents and she was embarrassed to see you. If you ask me, if there was something wrong with her illness and she had spit blood in her own house, it’s probably best that nobody moves in here. Who knows what would happen…. Aye, it’s up to you.”

The butcher didn’t want to say anymore. She instinctively covered up her nose and left.

All the others also recalled all the rumors that they have heard about AIDS and dared not linger here anymore. One by one, they also left.

Big Aunty was still sitting on the ground, dumbfounded. She had only recollected herself after a short while.

She was inside the courtyard and could see better than anyone else.

It wasn’t just the area next to the lounge chair, even on the door that was ajar, it seemed to have some spittle of blood, glowing eerily at her.

“!!!”

Big Aunty was so frantic that she couldn’t even get up onto her feet. She more or less crawled to the door and finally got herself up with the help of the wall. With shivering lips, she pulled the iron door shut and ran away scared out of her mind.

That made sense! If she really had AIDS, why would Ye Qing tell her colleagues at work? Of course she’d hide that from them!

How’d her colleagues know the truth?

Oh my god! Oh my god! Did she need to go to a hospital herself? She was sitting so close to the blood earlier. Could she have been infected too?
