Chapter 38 - Must Be Difficult Without A Husband (2)

“Oh, you poor thing.” The younger woman assumed that she meant her husband was working out of town. “My husband and I and my mother-in-law are exhausted just taking care of one child. It must be difficult without your husband around.”

She sighed and said, “Having a child costs so much money and energy. If the husband doesn’t even help out, what is the point of being married?”

As the woman was saying that, she switched to talking about how much her husband helped out all the time. Listening to her bragging as though she was complaining, Cheng Huan smiled and didn’t say anything.

Men? Whoever wanted them could have them. She wasn’t interested personally.

Time went by much faster as they were chatting. As soon as 5 o’clock came around, the kindergarten started playing a cheerful song and all the parents outside of the front door moved forward. Everybody wanted to be the first one to see their kids.

Cheng Huan was pushed forward a couple of steps. She had to reach out her hand to avoid bumping into someone else.

She moved a little bit to the side, peeked in between the crack of the door, and saw the teachers bringing the kids out shortly.

The kindergarten had taught the kids to line up on day one. They formed a straight line of sort as they walked over.

When the door opened up, the first teacher walked out and parents stepped up one by one as the kid’s name was announced.

Cheng Huan waited for a bit before she heard XingXing’s name called. She responded to it, pushed forward a little, and the parents moved over to both sides to create a path for her.

XingXing was standing in the very front and ran over to Cheng Huan as soon as he saw her. Cheng Huan squatted down to catch her son who had thrown himself at her. Giving him a smooch on his cheek, she picked up his hand with hers and said, “Okay, let’s go home.”

XingXing, with his little backpack on his back, bounced up and down on their way back. He told Cheng Huan how he had learned “Count The Ducks” in the afternoon and would sing it for her when they got home.

“Alright,” said Cheng Huan as she stroked him on his head. She then asked him how many friends he had made that day.

The little kiddo counted with his fingers. Reaching out four fingers, he said, “Four! have met RuiRui, MaoDou, and NiuNiu. And we played on the slide together.”*

“And, and we are all 4 years old!”

* T/N: Yes, there were only three names. I triple checked the original text. Don’t kill the messenger (translator) =).

“Oh, really? What a coincidence.” Cheng Huan laughed.

She figured her silly son would figure out why most of his classmates were four years old.

“Yeah!” XingXing nodded heavily. He didn’t understand what’s a “coincidence”, but he repeated it anyway, “What a coincidence!”

After he had recounted everything that he had seen and heard, XingXing asked Cheng Huan, “How was your day, Mom?”

The little kid looked at her with his sparkling eyes, as though he was expecting something.

Cheng Huan knew what that look meant right away. She pretended to think about it for a while before she said, “I was home all day thinking about XingXing.”

“I miss Mommy too!” XingXing bounced up and held her hand as he said in his milky voice. He was smiling so much that his eyes turned into a straight line.

After they had gotten home, XingXing performed the song that he had learned today for Cheng Huan, then he ran around the house after getting his praises.

After Cheng Huan finished preparing dinner, she called out to him.

The little kiddo wouldn’t even sit still while having dinner. He picked up a grain of rice that was stuck next to his lips and put it inside his mouth as he complained about how the food at school wasn’t as good as his mother’s cooking.

“I want to have mommy’s cooking.”

Cheng Huan would like to be able to cook for him as well, but the kindergarten provided the same food for everyone and outside food was not allowed. She couldn’t very well cook for him, so she could only comfort him.

In order to comfort the XingXing from the impact of not being able to have his mom’s cooking for lunch, Cheng Huan spent a long time playing with him. She was an hour later than usual when she went to open up her food stall.

Cheng Huan had no idea that the one-hour delay had cost her an opportunity to make money.

Chen Nian never saw her the day before, so he came back to try his luck again the next day. But all the other stalls already started doing business, and the corner one still remained close.

He was somewhat disappointed and had pretty much believed what Zheng Zhi had told him. He looked up another street food place that he heard was very good and waved down a taxi.

The moment that Chen Nian stepped into the taxi, Cheng Huan arrived on her tricycle. She opened up her rain canopy, pulled out her lighted sign, moved her ingredients into the cabinet inside her booth, connected up the power, and started greeting her customers who had just walked in.

“Go ahead and pick what you’d like.”
