Chapter 23 - “Where’s Daddy?” “Your Daddy has flown away.” (1)

XingXing had been wondering about this for a while now.

DouSha from downstairs has a daddy; XiaoMing on TV also has a daddy. Everybody has a daddy except for him.

He still remembered that Uncle Driver had also brought up daddy, then mommy seemed to have gotten angry. XingXing felt that mommy didn’t like this subject much, but he was still very curious.

The little kiddo buried his face inside his mother’s neck and thought to himself as he rolled his big eyes around; mommy had already said that she likes him the most. So she probably won’t get mad at him for asking?

Cheng Huan, indeed, did not get upset. She patted XingXing on his back and contemplated what she could tell him.

She couldn’t tell him the truth, that’s for sure. She hadn’t planned to bring her son to be reunited with his father. The child’s dad would for sure end up with the female lead. If the two of them showed up, they’d turn into the thorn sticking in between the male and female leads.

Almost in every single novel, any factors that prevented the male and female leads from being together would be destroyed in the end. Albeit this novel had already turned into reality for her, she was still unwilling to gamble with their lives.

She couldn’t afford to lose.

After weighing her options in her mind, Cheng Huan’s motion slowed. Organizing her thought a bit, she whispered slowly into XingXing’s ear, “That’s because XingXing’s daddy had already flown away.”

XingXing was visibly dumbfounded for a second before he looked up. His eyes widened, and he asked, “Flown away?”

Cheng Huan started making stuff up but still maintained a very serious look on her. “That’s right. XingXing’s daddy is Superman. He needed to go save the world, so he won’t be able to return until he had defeated all the villains.”

XingXing was obviously startled by her answer.

He was four years old, still at the age who’d believe there was superman. After he listened to Cheng Huan’s explanation, he was stunned for a little while longer before he let out an “Oh!”. Then, he suddenly scrambled down from her knees and crossed his arms in front of him.

“If daddy is Superman, does he change like this?”

He went through a very common motion in a cartoon where the main character used a certain set of gestures to turn into superman. XingXing was crazy about Superman and always dreamed that he had become friends with him and bought candies for him.

Cheng Huan paused a little but finally failed to picture the cold and solemn male lead in the novel doing something like that.

She tightened her lips a bit and said to XingXing, “I am not sure about that either.”

“Oh…” XingXing was disappointed. “How come Mom doesn’t know about it either?”

“Because Mommy had never seen Daddy fighting villains either.” Cheng Huan reached out, pulled the little kiddo into her arms, and carried on. “Daddy’s identity as Superman is a secret,  and he can’t let other people find out. So he has to sneak out when he goes to fight villains most of the time.”

The little kiddo listened very attentively. Afterward, he nodded solemnly, his chubby cheeks jiggled as he did that. “I understand. Because there are many bad guys out there. If they find out, then Mom and I will be in danger.”

Cheng Huan squeezed his hand and nodded definitively. “Yes. You are exactly right.”

“Then when will Daddy finish fighting the bad guys?” After listening to his mother’s description, inside XingXing’s mind, the image of his father had already turned into Superman in cartoons. Rolling in Cheng Huan’s arms, he asked in anticipation, “I kinda miss him.”

Cheng Huan thought about it for a little bit before she said to him, “Wait till XingXing is all grown up.”

After he was all grown up, he’d know that these were all lies.

“When I am old enough to sleep alone?” XingXing still remembered what Cheng Huan had told him the other night.

“Older than that.”

“Oh, older than that…” XingXing felt troubled. He wanted to see his dad, but he also didn’t want to stop sleeping with his mom.

The little kiddo thought it through with his not so big brain and finally concluded that sleeping with his mother was more important.
