Chapter 14 - I Promise I Will Always Enjoy Doing Homework! (1)

Moving was no small feat.

First, Cheng Huan had to go look at the apartments. There were a few locations that she liked online, but she still needed to go and check them out with her own eyes.

It was difficult bringing XingXing with her to look at the places, but she also didn’t feel comfortable leaving him home by himself. She made a pact with XingXing that she’d be gone for at most two hours each day and spend the rest of the time with him.

A kid that wasn’t taught anything didn’t know much. Cheng Huan used whatever leftover time she has to teach him.

Nothing too profound but just common knowledge in life, such as how to address people when you run into them; who to look for if you get lost outside; what to do if the house catches on fire, etc.

XingXing was a smart kid and usually picked it all up after a couple of times. Cheng Huan noticed that he has a particular affinity toward numbers. He could memorize an 11-digit phone number after she told him just once. He was able to read an analog clock after a couple of times.

Or, should she say that’s what one’d expect from a male lead’s son?

That night, after bathing XingXing, Cheng Huan gave him the news, “We will be moving the day after tomorrow.”

It took her a few days, but she was finally able to decide on the new place.

The apartment that she had her heart set on was new and its renovation completed. The parents had prepared it for their son when he got married. As luck would have it, the couple had a fight and broke up the day before they planned on getting their marriage certificate. Their son was so angry that he went overseas and said that he wouldn’t be back temporarily.

It was wasteful to just leave the place empty, so the parents decided to rent it out.

The area was nice and very green. It was newly built and complete with a kindergarten to senior high school nearby. Cheng Huan had asked around. The schools in the area were quite good. If all went well, XingXing would be able to attend the schools all the way. Once Cheng Huan saved up enough money, she could buy in the area as well.

A nice apartment meant the rent was also higher. The 80 m2 apartment cost $5,000 a month. She had to pay a one-month deposit and that came out to $10,000.

Cheng Huan was forthright when she signed the contract, but her heart ached when she saw the remaining amount in the bank afterward. But she didn’t spend too much time mourning over the money. They needed a new place, and it was a necessary expenditure. She could always earn it back.

By now, XingXing was already quite close to his mother and only wished he could spend every minute with her. Except that his mother needed to go “look for an apartment” every day. Once she was out, he was home by himself. XingXing did not like to be alone.

Unlike Cheng Huan, the little kiddo wasn’t as interested in moving. He was indifferent toward the whole thing. Instead of moving, he was much more interested in Cheng Huan’s schedule.

“That’s awesome!” He said, patronizing her. Then, he brought up when he was most concerned about. “Does that mean mom will be home with XingXing tomorrow.”

“No, darling.”

The little kiddo’s face was filled with disappointment after hearing her response.

“Alright.” He let out a sigh like a little grown up and said, “All you adults are always busy. I understand.”

“It’s not me that’s busy. We are busy.” Cheng Huan put XingXing in bed and turned up the air-conditioning. “The new place doesn’t have everything that we need. We will go buy all the rest tomorrow.”

She started describing to him what the new apartment looked like. As she was describing it, she started drawing it on a piece of paper.

Cheng Huan had some lessons on drawing when she was going to school. It wasn’t something she’d write home about, but enough to show off in front of a child.

Sure enough, XingXing was attracted by her drawing. He laid on the bed, his head stuck out next to Cheng Huan’s hand, marveling at her drawing.

“Mommy, you are so good at it!”

“Oh, this is nothing,” said Cheng Huan as she raised her brows and accepted her son’s compliment. She finished her drawing and pushed the piece of paper in front of XingXing.

“And this is what our new place looks like, prettier than it is in my drawing. Does XingXing like it?”

“Yes, he does!” replied XingXing loudly without hesitation.

Little kids were always scared of the unknown, including XingXing, as he had no idea what the new environment would be like. But he kept his fear in check right now because he wanted to be with his mother and his mother wanted to move to a new place.

Now, through the hands of Cheng Huan, the veil of the empty and unfamiliar new environment had finally been lifted for him.

The drawing on the piece of paper let him know that the new apartment was not scary; in fact, it was very nice.

Much better than where they were right now!

The little kiddo got excited all of a sudden. Kneeling on the bed, he touched the corner of the paper with his fingers as though he wanted to touch reality through the drawing.
