Chapter 256 - This was something that she had burned a long time ago (1)
The bank had safe deposit boxes, but it unfortunately didn't go up to box 21908.
Jiang Fei said, "This bank must have multiple branches in this town. We won't have time to search all of them today."
Bei Nuan suddenly had an idea.
"I have… a strange idea," she sheepishly said.
"Tell us." Lu Xingchi never thought any of Bei Nuan's ideas were odd.
"The bank near my home is on a street called Binhe Street. The bank's street number was quite small, definitely single digit. So I'm thinking, could there be a Binhe Street here too? And a bank on Binhe Street…"
The apartment in this world had the same address as her home. So then, could that bank have the same address as the bank in her world?
Bei Nuan secretly thought that although this logic was strange, it made a lot of sense.
"The Yanhe River is to the north of the town. If there's a Binhe Street, it must be on the northside." Lu Xingchi acted quickly and was already walking out.
(T/N: Binhe translates to riverside.)
Everyone got back into the minivan. Lu Xingchi drove towards the Yanhe River. When they got there, they saw the street sign for the tree-lined road was Binhe Street.
Before they went to the end of the street, everyone saw the bank's logo from far away.
When they got closer, they saw that the street number on the bank was seven.
Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi looked at each other. They thought this was a promising sign.
Lu Xingchi parked the minivan in front of the bank. The zombies outside the bank's glass doors immediately flocked over.
Before the skinny man could faint, Tang Tang grabbed him and said, "Don't be afraid, look."
Lu Xingchi had already gotten out and raised his crossbow. None of his arrows missed. Almost instantly, the zombies had fallen down a few steps away. Not a single one was left
The skinny man stared at the scene with widened eyes and a gaping mouth.
Bei Nuan jumped out of the minivan and followed Lu Xingchi into the bank. They made their way over to the safety deposit boxes without any hindrances.
There was a wall filled with safe deposit boxes. These boxes had the same size as mailboxes. There was box after box. Each box was about 10 centimeters by 20 centimeters and had numbered metal tags.
Bei Nuan immediately found Box 21908. However, the flat safety deposit box had two keyholes.
Bei Nuan inserted her key in one of the holes, and the key easily went in. She gently turned the key, and the key smoothly turned halfway. It was obvious that this was the right key.
Unfortunately, the box didn't unlock.
"This type of safe deposit box requires two keys. The bank keeps one key, and the renter of the box keeps the other key. You need the bank staff to open the box with you every time, " Lu Xingchi explained.
However, he obviously didn't have the patience to look for the bank key. He pressed his hand on the safe deposit box. The door opened with a click.
There was a red metal box inside.
Bei Nuan pulled the red box out. The metal box wasn't big. It was only slightly taller and wider than the pencil case she had used as a kid.
"This is probably something my dad put here, right?"
Although the key worked, this was another world. She felt a bit guilty. She felt like she was stealing someone else's stuff.
"You'll know if you look inside." Lu Xingchi reached out and took off the lid of the box for her.
Bie Nuan recognized the notebook that was crammed into the metal box. The cover was plain and made of brown kraft paper. The notebook wasn't big, only slightly bigger than her hand.
This was one of her dad's journals.
Bei Nuan flipped through the notebook and saw her father's handwriting.
They had gone on a preposterous wild goose chase and actually found something.
Her dad had the habit of keeping a handwritten journal. Bei Nuan had laughed about his habit many times.
She had said, "Dad, even if you keep a journal, you should keep a digital one. You'll be able to insert photos, videos, etc."
Her dad had responded with a laugh, "If nothing else, what if the power goes out one day? What will those of you that can't live without your screens do?"
Unfortunately, his prediction had come true.
After her dad had died, he left behind a small box full of journals. They were all small notebooks with simple, brown kraft paper covers and neatly stacked by their years.
Bei Nuan had once flipped through them and read many things about his father's youth.
Even though her father was gone, she felt that it was wrong to look at them. It would be spying on her father's life. And so, she had burned the journals along with paper versions of things that her dad had liked as an offering to him.
This should be one of those journals.
This was something that she had burned a long time ago. And now, it had miraculously appeared in the safety deposit box in another world.
While Bei Nuan was lost in her thoughts, the skinny man had followed Tang Tang over and asked, "What are you guys doing? You're not really going to withdraw money, right? With the way the world is, money is useless. It's a waste paper."
Bei Nuan didn't want an outsider to see. She immediately closed the cover on the small red metal box and put it into her bag.
"I'm done taking out money. Let's go procure stuff!" she said.
Her goal was accomplished. It was time to finish the task assigned by the search team.
