Chapter 99 - So why were you squatting in a group of zombies? (1)
When Bei Nuan abruptly woke up, it was still dark outside. The first thing she did was look at the others.
There was a short distance between where she was sleeping and where the others were sleeping. She could see that they were peacefully sleeping in their sleeping bags except for Du Ruo. His sleeping bag was empty.
Bei Nuan got out of her sleeping bag and ran over to Lu Xingchi's side without putting on slippers.
"Lu Xingchi." Bei Nuan crouched down and lightly poked him.
"What's wrong?" Lu Xingchi opened his eyes without needing her call out a second time.
Bei Nuan lowered her voice. She anxiously said, "Du Ruo is gone."
Lu Xingchi glanced at Du Ruo's sleeping bag and sat up at once.
They put on another layer of clothes and walked to the door of the small cafeteria. The door was locked, but the night guard wasn't there.
Lu Xingchi twisted the knob, and the door unlocked.
They went downstairs and met Song Xiyi, who was on his way back up.
"I was just coming to find you guys," he said, "Your friend said he was about to mutate and left by himself a few seconds ago."
Lu Xingchi and Bei Nuan looked at each other. They knew that Du Ruo didn't want to risk hurting them. But, if he went out before mutating, what if he was eaten by zombies?
Lu Xingchi held out his hand. "Give me my crossbow. I'll go out to look for Du Ruo."
"I'm coming too!" Bei Nuan quickly said.
She had a stubborn expression, and Lu Xingchi couldn't change her mind, so he agreed, "Okay, but you have to put on your protective gear."
Three minutes later, Bei Nuan was fully dressed in protective gear and followed Lu Xingchi out of the cafeteria.
She didn't see Du Ruo outside of the cafeteria, and there were no strange movements either. Seeing that there were no clustered zombies, Bei Nuan felt a lot calmer.
The campus was so big. Where did Du Ruo go?
They walked through the dorm area. Under the cover of trees, they quietly searched along the paths.
They didn't see Du Ruo anywhere or encounter any zombies.
With no clue where Du Ruo could be, they continued searching the huge campus. After an unknown time had passed, Lu Xingchi suddenly touched Bei Nuan's shoulder and gestured for her to look ahead.
Not far ahead, under the streetlamp, there were two figures squatting amidst a horde of zombies.
One was a student zombie. It had its head lowered and was making a "gugugu" sound.
And the other figure was Du Ruo. He was crouched down next to that zombie with his head lowered too and making "gugugu" sounds too.
"Gugugu?"
"Gugugu."
"Gu?"
"Gu! Gugugu!"
There was questioning and answering as if they were chatting.
Bei Nuan: "..."
She felt heartbroken.
Bei Nuan clutched Lu Xingchi's shirt and quietly asked him, "Has he really changed into a zombie?"
Du Ruo didn't become a king of zombies as he had wished. It looked like his greatest joy after mutating was chatting with other zombies. She hoped that he could be happy forever.
Bei Nuan truly felt too awful. She wanted to be comforted and instinctively placed her head on Lu Xingchi's chest.
Lu Xingchi gently hugged her. He stroked her hair soothingly and looked at those two crouched figures.
After watching for a while, Lu Xingchi suddenly said, "Doesn't look like it."
He raised his crossbow with his other hand and shot a spike near Du Ruo's feet.
Du Ruo paused and raised his head to look over. When he saw the two hugging people under the shadow of trees, he vigorously waved his hands in excitement.
Bei Nuan: ?
Du Ruo strode over to them, leaving behind his chatting buddy.
As he passed by the zombies, none of them reached out to him. Instead, they gave way to him. His parting from the group was like a breeze over a pool of spring water that only momentarily disturbed the pool.
Du Ruo looked calm and walked briskly like a returning king.
